After a Year in Braces, I Finally Found a Water Flosser That Doesn’t Hurt My Gums
I have a lot to say about keeping teeth clean during orthodontic treatment.
Right after I got my braces on, my dentist kept reminding me: “Brush really well, or your teeth will be stained with white spots when the braces come off.” I was confident at first. I bought special orthodontic toothbrushes, interproximal brushes, floss threaders — the whole set. I spent over ten minutes brushing after every meal.
But at my first follow-up, my dentist pointed at my gums and said, “They’re a bit swollen. There’s food stuck under your brackets.”
I felt defeated. I was brushing so hard — why couldn’t I get them clean?
Later I learned the problem was the “blind spots.” Brackets and wires turn your teeth into a maze. No matter how fine the toothbrush bristles are, they can’t reach the tiny gaps between the bracket and the tooth, let alone the deep gum pockets where food hides for days. My dentist suggested I try a water flosser.
To be honest, I was resistant at first. I’ve always had sensitive gums that bleed easily even from brushing. I was afraid a water flosser would be too harsh and leave my mouth full of blood. But I couldn’t stand that sticky, unclean feeling in my mouth after meals anymore, so I finally bought one.
I started with a water flosser a friend recommended. The stream was thick, and the pressure was hard to control. Every time I aimed it at my brackets, my gums would throb. Occasionally there would be a little blood. After a few tries, I gave up on it.
Then I switched to the TTFACE, and that’s when I truly understood that water flossing doesn’t have to hurt.
The nozzle produces a stream that’s only 0.6mm wide. To give you an idea — that’s even thinner than regular floss. Thin enough to slip right through the gaps under your brackets and go straight into the spaces between your teeth and along your gumline. The first time I used it, I flushed out tiny food particles I could barely see — things that even floss wouldn’t have caught. And the stream just gently washed them away.
The flow is steady and soft — like a light drizzle, not a hard splash. Perfect for after-meal cleaning.
The water alternates between gentle and stronger — it almost feels like a mini massage for your gums.
What reassures me the most is that it really doesn’t harm your gums. With my old water flosser, if I held it in one spot for just one second longer, that area would turn red. But with the TTFACE, even if I deliberately aim at the same gap for a while, it just feels cool — no pain at all. Later I read that the pressure is calibrated to be genuinely gentle. It doesn’t rely on brute force to blast away debris. Instead, it uses precision (the ultra-fine stream) and gentle pulsing to softly rinse away plaque and stuck food.
Now I spend about 30 seconds after dinner each day going around my mouth — it feels like a little spa treatment for my teeth. I’ve been using it for nearly half a year. My gum bleeding is basically gone, and at my last checkup, my dentist even complimented me on how much healthier my gums look.
If you’re like me — sensitive gums, afraid of harsh water flossers, but still want to get every bracket and gap completely clean — then the TTFACE, with its super‑fine stream, dual modes, and gentle pressure, might be just right for you.
Orthodontic treatment is a long road. The right tool can make it so much easier.
